The United States women's table tennis team kept its bronze medal hopes alive by defeating the Netherlands 3-1 Wednesday evening. Earlier in the day, the U.S. fell to Singapore 3-0. Team USA will be back in action at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Peking University Gymnasium to face Nigeria. A win tomorrow will guarantee the U.S. the No. 2 seed in its group and the opportunity to advance to the bronze medal bracket.
Against the Netherlands, Chen Wang (New York, N.Y.) defeated Jiao Li 3-2 and Jun Gao (Gaithersburg, Md.) trumped Jie Li 3-0 in singles play. In the doubles match, Wang and Crystal Huang (San Gabriel, Calif.) fell 3-1 but Gao came back in the fourth match to defeat Elena Timina 3-0.
Against Singapore, Gao fell 3-1 to Wang Yue Gu, Wang lost 3-1 to Tianwei Feng and the doubles team of Gao and Huang lost to Wang and Li Jia Wei 3-0.
The women's team champion will be crowned on August 18 while individual play will begin on Aug. 19.
